Water Polo Recruit Signed

Laie, HI-The Brigham Young University-Hawaii men's water polo team signed California standout Sam Somerhalder to a letter of intent this week. Somerhalder, who plays the two-meter position and was First-Team All Bay Valley Athletic League three years in a row, becomes the first recruit to sign with the Seasiders this year.

Somerhalder, who was named his team's Most Valuable Offensive Player and was on the honor roll, led Liberty High School in scoring with 125 goals last season and also was the team leader in steals with 72. He is 6-2 and weighs 210 pounds and is the son of Phil and Julie Somerhalder of Oakley, California.

BYU-Hawaii Head Coach Aukai Ferguson said he was pleased to have Somerhalder join the Seasiders and looks forward to him playing in Laie. BYU-Hawaii broke into the top twenty national rankings this past season in just the school's second year of water polo competition and qualified for the Western Water Polo Association post-season playoffs in their first year in the league.
